Netflix is one of the world's leading entertainment services, with 283 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

Netflix has been changing the way people watch shows and movies and we've built a global Content Delivery Network called Open Connect , which sets the standard for video delivery. We’ve recently embarked on a journey to stream our content live, which comes with an exciting variety of opportunities and technical challenges.

To embrace those challenges, we are looking to add a software engineer to the Open Connect Control Plane team to craft the scalable, reliable systems needed to build the best Live experience possible.

The role involves building:

• Cloud services that customers directly hit when they press ‘Play’

• Algorithms for steering customers to Netflix Live hardware such that they have the best possible Quality-of-Experience, taking into account network topology, system load and other factors

• Systems that smartly direct how Open Connect caching appliances fill from each other to deliver a Live stream from origin to the edge

• Load-balancing algorithms for optimizing hardware utilization

• Operational knobs and tools to quickly diagnose and fix problems as they arise: when you’re doing it live, every second counts!

We spend our time trying to answer questions like these:

• What do we need to build in order to handle the biggest Live streaming event ever?

• How do we design our systems to react to failure, traffic shifts and other changes in real-time?

• What’s the best way to share system capacity between Live and VOD traffic?

• How do we make our Live systems easy to operate?

We are looking for someone who identifies with the following:

Basic Qualifications:

• 7+ years software development or proficiency with a modern programming language

• Experience building and operating business-critical systems at scale

• Distributed Systems experience (e.g. building stateful & stateless systems, experiencewith Casandra, Kafka, etc)

Nice To Have:

• Live streaming experience

• Basic background in networking concepts

• Big Data Experience (e.g. Hive, Spark, Presto, etc.)

• Experience with ML or optimization algorithms

We rely on market indicators to determine compensation and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to get it right. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary and will also be dependent on your location. 

 

Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $100,000 - $720,000.
