Position Overview

The on-call (fill-in) Multi-Media General Assignments position is a dynamic and diverse role that spans across multiple platforms, including radio broadcasting, online video content, web-based writing, social media engagement, and other media platforms. The ideal candidate has a versatile skill set to backfill various functions in our newsroom as needed, including Editor/Anchor, Reporter, Producer, and Digital Content Editor. The individual will collaborate with news and talk show teams to produce and share stories that resonate on broadcast channels and digital spaces. Proficiency in multimedia delivery is essential, as is the ability to generate factual, articulate, and compelling news content. In this on-call capacity, the role involves contributing to talk shows, the news department, and maintaining a strong presence on social media platforms and MyNorthwest.com. The ideal candidate will be adept at working independently in a deadline-driven environment, excel at multitasking, and communicate effectively with team members, particularly in high-stress scenarios.

  • This position is an onsite role that requires the employee to work at our Seattle site.

What You Will Do:

Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop and curate multimedia news content for newscasts, talk shows, MyNorthwest articles, and various digital platforms.
  • Ensure a consistent and high level of accuracy in news reporting, while upholding the station's branding.
  • Find, record, edit, and mix audio promptly to meet deadlines.
  • Craft accurate and engaging news scripts and articles for diverse media outlets.
  • Assist in shaping, developing, and managing the host(s)' ideas, opinions, and story angles.
  • Leverage social media to effectively showcase and promote stories.
  • Identify and secure interviews with guests and newsmakers; build a robust network of news sources and contacts.
  • Operate with speed and efficiency, responding decisively to breaking news and navigating unforeseen challenges.
  • Maintain proficiency with technical systems relevant to multimedia broadcasting.

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:
  • Flexible Schedule: Availability for fill-in backup coverage when needed; on-call hours may range from 3 AM to 10 PM. There is no set regular schedule nor guarantee of hours.
  • Story Development: Proficient in identifying, developing, and delivering engaging news stories and creating original content.
  • Writing and Production: Exceptional writing, editing, and production capabilities.
  • Compelling Copy: Ability to write factual and captivating news copy.
  • Audio Proficiency: Skilled in recording and editing audio.
  • Broadcast Writing: Concise and conversational broadcast writing, along with proficient on-air delivery.
  • Technical Savvy: Computer literacy and the technical skills necessary to operate studio equipment.
  • Social Media: A solid understanding of social media platforms and the ability to engage across these channels.
  • Independent and Team Work: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Organizational Skills: Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail and superior time management abilities.
  • Journalistic Integrity: A profound understanding of journalistic standards, ethics, and expectations, with demonstrated news judgment.
  • Multitasking and Communication: Proven multitasking skills and the ability to communicate clearly and calmly under pressure.
  • Receptiveness to Feedback: Openness to direction and feedback, with the ability to integrate it into work.
  • Team Collaboration: Effective at working within a team environment.
  • Education: A four-year degree in journalism or a related communications field is preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience in news editing/producing, anchoring, and reporting is desirable.
  • Regional Knowledge: Familiarity with local issues and political dynamics is preferred.

Physical Demands
  • Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Compensation Range

$27.00 - $37.80 per hour.

Hourly rate will be determined by an evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal and external benchmarks.

The pay range provided here spans multiple levels for this role.
