JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Head Custodian
REPORTS TO: Principal or Supervisor

GENERAL SUMMARY Under general supervision is responsible for a complete and efficient custodial service including all reasonable and necessary labor, supervision, equipment and all supplies needed to maintain the institutions campus and the cleanliness of its facilities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Oversees and/or conducts general building maintenance as necessary which involves such duties as replacing illumination bulbs and lens, ceiling tiles, and cleaning heating and air-conditions unit drills as needed.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining a clean and safephysical environment and monitors for potential hazards.
- Head custodian supervises, trains and teaches custodial staff in the effective and efficient skills needed to perform their role in custodial services and to ensure the school environment is clean, safe and free of distractions and hazards.
- Assembles furniture as requested, moves furniture as needed for all school related activities such as in-service training/staff development.
- Clean indoor areas which involve such duties as sweeping, mopping and waxing floors, cleaning tables, vacuuming, cleaning carpets, etc.
- Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of buildings daily, as work schedule dictates, and reports repair needs, property loss on damage to his/her immediate supervisor.
- Maintains parking lots which involve such duties as removing debris and monitoring related activity, and assumes responsibility for compliance with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, debris and waste.
- Maintains files and records of equipment, fixed asset tags, inventory, material data sheets, safety inspections and work calendar, and requisition supplies and materials as needed to perform duties.
- Maintain an awareness of health and safety hazards through yearly participation in training programs and consulting reference materials and conducts each activity in accordance with the district chemical hygiene plan an procedure.
- Operates and maintains equipment such as power blowers, weed eaters, burnishes, floor scrubbers, power tools, etc.; utilizes various cleaning supplies and hand tools.
- Assist in enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and board policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High School diploma or general education degree (GED) is needed with one to two years in building and floor care maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
Knowledge: Knowledge of the practices, policies and procedures of the school district. Extensive knowledge of the practices, procedures, materials and supplies of general custodian work. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and manuals. Ability to basic mathematical equations and perform these operations using units or American money, weight measurement, volume and distance.
Skills/Effort: Ability to effectively and appropriately communicate with custodial staff and lead by example while demonstrating the appropriate skills to staff under their supervision. Ability to complete work requiring constant attention. Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written directions. Ability to operate and/or utilize carpentry equipment/materials such as saws, drill presses, routers, sanders, etc. Skill in performing preventative maintenance, installation, and repair operations incidental to regular duties and/or areas of assignment. Skill in the use of standard hand tools. Skill in reading, interpreting and applying plans, specifications, and blueprints. Ability to communicate effectively with immediate supervisor, staff, and other groups and individuals involved in daily activities.

Work conducted both indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, noise, electrical hazards, dust and wetness. Frequent contact with strong cleaning agents. Moderately heavy physical exertion is frequently required to lift and move objects weighing up to 150 pounds. Routine travel is required; no overnight travel required.
