Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Japanese beginning Spring 2022. Mesa College is located in the Kearny Mesa area in the city of San Diego, and is one of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District. The assignment may include day, evening, and/or weekend classes. In addition, this pool may be used to fill identical vacancies that may occur during the academic year.

Major Responsibilities:
The Assistant Professor of Japanese is in the Department of Languages and reports to the Dean of Arts and Languages. The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching beginning and intermediate level courses in Japanese and serving as the discipline lead, contributing to conditions for students to succeed both in the classroom and throughout the campus, and serving on and/or chairing department and campus committees.
Classes may be taught either on-campus or in a hybrid format. The instructor must fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with the San Diego Community College job description. A typical weekly teaching load consists of 15 hours of lecture courses.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applications must show evidence of meeting the following minimum qualifications (degrees must be from accredited institutions):

Master’s in the language being taught

OR

Bachelor’s in the language being taught AND Master’s in another language or linguistics

OR

the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:
  • An understanding of the community college environment and mission, and its impact on the future success of language students.
  • Evidence of recent and successful experience teaching Japanese language and culture and a commitment to lower division language teaching.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement contemporary philosophies and methods of instruction and assessment in the teaching of Japanese, including the integration of communicative learning activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to appropriate academic standards, especially the National Standards for Foreign Language Teaching and student learning outcomes for lower division language courses.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and ability to successfully use technology to support language learning/acquisition and student success.
  • Commitment to professional growth in teaching as well as Japanese language, linguistics, culture, and literature through participation in conferences, scholarship, and/or other relevant activities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality and experience working collaboratively with colleagues, staff, students, and community members in a variety of on and off-campus activities (cross-disciplinary projects, academic committees, campus committees, student clubs, etc.).
  • Collaborative experience and leadership skills in specific department or campus committee work such as curriculum development, program review, outcomes assessment, faculty evaluation, study abroad, collaboration with educational and community partners, and/or participation in departmental initiatives.
  • Successful experience with conflict resolution strategies both inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral English and Japanese.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting equity and excellence for community college students.

Arts & Science-College - Regular Tenured-Tenure Track (non-Restricted)


Class 1, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($5,883.75 - $7,928.01) per month based on the current AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.


Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
