Job Description

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Financial Consultant to join our leadership team on a contract basis. The ideal candidate will bring strategic financial support, support data-informed decision-making, and help position our small but growing company for long-term financial health and sustainable growth.

Dirigo Safety, LLC, founded in 2016 in Maine, is a law-enforcement-owned business providing expert training, consulting, policy development, and accreditation support to police agencies. Starting as a two-person consultancy focused on traffic safety, it has grown to serve over 2,000 officers and 118 agencies through online and in-person training. The company contracts with key institutions like the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety and the Office of Cannabis Policy. In 2022, it expanded into publishing by acquiring The Law Enforcement Street Reference . Also in 2022, Dirigo Safety expanded its services by launching DirigoRMS, a company dedicated to training municipalities and businesses in essential risk management skills. These include active shooter preparedness, de-escalation techniques, and leadership development courses. By 2024, Dirigo had entered the New Hampshire market and acquired Granite State Police Career Counseling, marking its regional growth.

This is a flexible, part-time role—just a few hours a month—perfect for a seasoned finance executive who enjoys working with early-stage, growth-focused companies without the commitment of a full-time position.

Responsibilities

  • Lead executive team with drafting financial goals and performing assessments of the current financial situation, followed by forecasting and budgeting.
  • Mitigate financial risks through working with the executive team to align financial goals with the overall business strategy and implement strategic planning and proactive measures including prioritizing the allocation of financial resources.
  • Assess the financial health of the company using key performance indicators to measure success.
  • Track and monitor financial performance over time to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Identify and assess potential financial risks and develop measures to mitigate them.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting by preparing and analyzing financial reports and statements and discussing with executive team monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Assess the financial viability of new projects or initiatives and adapt financial plans based on market changes or disruptions.
  • Effectively communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders to ensure understanding and alignment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a CFO, VP of Finance, or senior finance leader (preferably in startups, high-growth, or SMB environments).
  • Strong understanding of financial planning, accounting, and analysis.
  • Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience working with external stakeholders including investors, banks, and auditors.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Economics or related field desired but not required, MBA, CPA, or CFA a plus.

Compensation

This is a contract-based position with a flexible schedule. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and time commitment, and may be structured hourly, retainer-based, or project-based.
