Function The purpose of the class is to conduct pre-employment background investigations for all positions within the Hampton Police Division and other City Departments as assigned. Serve as a consultant to various investigative units in all types of Police related functions. Performs duties under the general supervision of the Personnel, Recruiting and Training Unit Commander.
Minimum Qualifications - Required graduation from high school or successful completion of GED. Previous Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certified Basic Law Enforcement preferred. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice is preferred.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
- Must successfully complete a Police Division background investigation to include a polygraph examination and pre-employment screening for controlled substances.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
Additional Requirements - Must possess extensive knowledge of Police Criminal Investigations and Interrogations.
- Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
- Extensive experience conducting and interpreting background investigation. 3+ years of law enforcement investigative experience to include: Thorough knowledge of interviewing techniques, police background investigations, and police recruiting and employment standards.

- Exceptional oral, written and presentation skills required.
- Knowledge of computer programs to include Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.
- The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedule
for a complete background check.
